Memorial Service
February 03, 2007

Today was a  memorial service for Yong Won's father.  It was a traditional Korean ceremony that's held on the anniversary of his death.  Before the ceremony, the women of the family cook traditional foods all day.  These foods are then placed in specific positions on the table along with some of the favorite foods of the deceased.  Late at night, it is believed that the spirit of the father comes into the home and has a meal with the whole family.  There's a special sequence to the event that includes numerous very low bows.  These very low bows (you kneel and your head touches the ground) are the sign of utmost respect.

What I learned today about Korea:  1)  Last year it was very uncomfortable to bow so low, but this year I could do it easily.
